Embracing British Weather on Your Wedding Day

It’s been a scorching week across the UK, but that hasn’t really been the story of summer so far in 2026. When we think summer's just getting started, we get rain, then sun, then rain again. British weather is almost impossible to predict, so today we wanted to talk about preparing for the weather on your wedding day, rain or shine.

At Worton Hall, we have a variety of outdoor wedding ceremony and reception options available. Our Farmhouse garden (available if booked as your wedding accommodation) is a beautiful setting for your ceremony or reception, with the main hall booked so it is available as a wet-weather contingency. There is also the option of having an outdoor drinks reception in our Main Square courtyard. Beautiful Lavender bushes and large wooden benches create a lovely space to greet your guests in the sunshine.

What if it’s hot?

Rain is often the biggest concern for couples planning a summer wedding, but we wanted to start with the positives. Of course, you’re hoping for a glorious day if you're booking for the summer months, this unlocks the possibility of hosting some of your wedding outdoors. But while the warm weather is great, it can also become too hot for you and your guests.

Cold Drinks

Make sure chilled water and refreshing drinks are readily available throughout the day. Your guests will thank you, especially during the ceremony and drinks reception. We can even move part of our bar into the garden, which is fully staffed for your day.

Creating Shaded Areas

Providing shaded spots allows guests to take a break from the sun while still enjoying the outdoor atmosphere. During your ceremony, guests may be sitting out in the sun for longer than you, so be mindful when planning timings. Parasols can also add a beautiful touch to your wedding styling. Even umbrellas, often associated with rain, can be just as useful for providing shade.

Ice Cream

Nothing says summer quite like ice cream. You can go as small as made-to-order ice cream pots, or even a cart or ice cream van! It’s the ultimate summer crowd pleaser and a simple way to keep guests cool and smiling.

Wedding Favours and Handheld Fans

Handheld fans are another thoughtful addition that guests will appreciate during warmer weather. A perfect summer wedding favour.

Garden Games

Summer weddings and garden games are a perfect match. They're a great way to entertain guests between the ceremony and wedding breakfast while making the most of the outdoor space.

A Basket of Essentials

Consider creating a basket filled with practical items such as sunscreen, tissues, handheld fans, and mints. It's a small detail that can make a big difference on a hot day.

Keeping Flowers Fresh

Warm temperatures can be challenging for fresh flowers. Ask your florist for advice and ensure bouquets and arrangements have access to water and shade where possible to keep them looking their best throughout the celebrations.

Dress for Comfort

Brides may want to consider lighter fabrics, while grooms can explore breathable tailoring options. A second look or outfit change into something cooler is another great option for post-ceremony celebrations.

It's also worth reminding guests that they may be walking on grass or spending time outdoors, which can be a deal breaker for heels.

Plan Your Photography

Bright sunshine creates stunning opportunities, particularly during golden hour. Your photographer will know how to make the most of the light while helping you avoid the strongest midday sun.

What if it rains?

Although we would love to guarantee you an outdoor ceremony and drinks reception, the great British weather often has other ideas! If that's the case, then we can hold your wedding ceremony in our indoor ceremony space, the Hayloft Gallery, instead. The Hall can really come alive in wet, gloomy weather, the fairy light canopy taking centre stage. It’s a really cosy atmosphere.

Wet Weather Essentials:

Embrace Flexibility:

One of the advantages of choosing a venue like Worton Hall is the ability to adapt plans without compromising the experience. While we know moving your day indoors is extremely disheartening, having an indoor alternative for your ceremony or drinks reception means you can relax, knowing the day will run smoothly, whatever the weather decides to do.

Keeping Dry:

If you're planning to explore the park for photographs, a change of footwear can be a lifesaver. No one wants to spend the day worrying about muddy heels. An umbrella is a must in rainy conditions for keeping you dry and helping you create some incredible photos

Trust Your Photographer

Some of the most romantic wedding photographs are taken in unexpected weather. Moody weather can be a great aesthetic for your wedding photos. And if the sun breaks later in the day, you take advantage of dramatic skies, reflections on pathways, and a few raindrops, which can create images that are every bit as memorable as those taken in sunshine.

A Positive Mindset

Perhaps the most important thing to pack on a rainy wedding day is perspective. At the end of the day, you and your guests won't remember that it rained; they’ll remember the laughter, the food, the dancing and the joy of celebrating with you.

What if it’s windy:

Although not as bad as a rainy day, a windy day can be truly uncomfortable. While a gentle breeze can be welcome on a warm summer's day, stronger winds can affect everything from hairstyles and veils to table decorations and guest comfort.

The good news is that with a little planning, there's no reason why a breezy forecast should put a dampener on your celebrations.

Windy Wedding Essentials

Secure Your Décor

Lightweight decorations, place cards, table runners and floral arrangements can all be vulnerable to gusts of wind. Speak to your florist and stylist about securing any outdoor décor to ensure everything stays looking beautiful throughout the day.

Prepare for Veils and Hairstyles

A dramatic veil can look stunning in the breeze, but it's worth discussing the weather with your hairstylist beforehand. Extra pins, hairspray and a secure style can help you stay picture-perfect all day long.

Think About Your Flowers

Bouquets and delicate floral installations can be affected by strong winds. Choosing sturdier blooms or ensuring arrangements are well anchored can help avoid any last-minute surprises.

While wind may not be the weather you were hoping for, it often brings character, atmosphere and some truly memorable moments. With a little preparation, you can focus less on the forecast and more on enjoying your day.

What If It Snows?

And finally, what about snow?

At Worton Hall, we only host outdoor ceremonies between April and September, so we're unlikely to see a snowy garden wedding. However, snow can still present some unique challenges and exciting opportunities for winter weddings.

The biggest consideration is travel. If snow is forecast, it's worth encouraging guests to allow extra time for their journey and consider alternative transport arrangements where necessary. Suppliers may also appreciate a little extra flexibility when travelling to and from the venue.

On the other hand, a dusting of snow can create a truly magical backdrop for your wedding photographs. The Oxfordshire countryside looks stunning in winter, and snowy landscapes can add an extra touch of romance and atmosphere to your day.

As with any weather forecast, preparation is key. With a little planning and a flexible mindset, even a snowy wedding day can become something truly memorable. ❄️

Final Thoughts:

British weather might be famously unpredictable but it rarely gets in the way of a beautiful wedding. With a little planning and the flexibility that Worton Hall offers, you can enjoy your day, whatever the forecast brings.

Sunshine or showers, the most important thing is the celebration itself and the memories you’ll take away long after the day is over.
